Labor Organizing Experience

In my six years of teaching, a highlight for me was organizing with my colleagues and making our union stronger. I was very active in my union during my time as a classroom teacher. While teaching full-time, I also:

  • Served as a Site Rep and Member Engagement Officer;

  • Completed CTA's Emerging Leader training at the Summer Institute at UCLA;

  • Organized educators, parents, and community partners;

  • Conducted 1-1 meetings and facilitated site meetings;

  • Attended the CTA's Issues Conference in Las Vegas

  • Attended General Council and Executive Board meetings;

  • Used social media as important tool for campaign escalation;

  • Attended community organizing workshop series as part of the AFT 2019 Conference for Civil, Human, and Women's Rights in Montgomery, AL

Through this work, I learned that unions are the surest road to dignity and justice for all workers. These experiences impacted me in profound, transformative ways, and I hope to bring the lessons I learned from these experiences to my work with your organization.

AFT Conference for Civil, Human, and Women's Rights

In 2019, had the opportunity to travel to Montgomery, Alabama, where I attended a 3-part community organizing workshop. I also had the privilege of visiting the Equal Justice Institute's Legacy Museum and The National Memorial for Peace and Justice while I was in Montgomery.

Emerging Leaders Training at the CTA Summer Institute

In 2017, I attended the CTA Summer Institute in UCLA and completed their Emerging Leaders Track. I learned about the history of the labor movement, the importance of 1:1 relational organizing, and how to lead and facilitate meaningful 10-minute meetings at my school site.
